And the NRSV still maintains this understanding with its marginal notes to Exodus 21:6 and 22:8 (Heb. 7), “Or to/before the judges.” Some conservatively and traditionally minded interpreters also offer this interpretation straightforwardly.20 Over the course of the twentieth century, however, comparative religio-historical considerations increasingly changed the interpretive frame of reference. It became doubtful that ʾĕlōhīm did in fact mean “judge.”21
